Banjul was formerly known as Bathurst is the capital of The Gambia. The population of the city proper is about 35,000 but the total urban area is many times larger with a population of about 0.5 million. It is situated on St Mary's Island (or Banjul Island) where the Gambia River enters the Atlantic Ocean. The island is connected to the mainland by passenger and vehicle ferries to the north and bridges to the south. The British founded Banjul in 1816 as a trading post and base for suppressing slave trading. First named Bathurst, the name was changed in 1973. In 1994, Banjul had a bloodless military coup d'etat in which President Dawda Jawara was overthrown and replaced by the country's current (and twice reelected) President Yahya Jammeh. Attractions in Banjul include 35 meter high Arch 22, Textile Museum, Gambian National Museum, the Albert Market, Banjul State House, Banjul Court House, two cathedrals and several major mosques.

Peanut processing is the country's main industry, with palm wood, palm oil, bees wax and skins and hides are also shipped from its port. Ferries sail from Banjul to Barra. And is served by the Banjul International Airport. The Trans-West African Coastal Highway connects Banjul to Guinea-Bissau - Dakar and Bissau.
