Mombasa is Kenya's second largest city and is located on the Indian Ocean. Mombasa is a major port and also has an international airport. The city is the center of the coastal tourism industry. The original Arabic name is Manbasa; in Kiswahili it is called Kisiwa Cha Mvita (or Mvita for short), which means Island of War. The port serves both Kenya and interior countries, linking them to the Ocean. The town is served by the road and railway network both well developed, road and rail bridge, ferries and a causeway and the Moi International Airport, to many of the world's cities. Until 1905, Mombasa was Kenya capital. It is also a famous African city and one of the largest African city.
The town has is mainly occupied by the Swahili / Muslim Mijikenda inhabitants. There have been also been many immigrants and traders who have settled in Mombasa from Indian sub-continent, Middle East and Persia who came as traders and skilled craftsmen. Given the job opportunities in the tourism industry, people from the interior also flock to Mombasa.
There are several places to visit in Mombasa, including Fort Jesus, built by the Portuguese, and the Old Town, with old architecture of Islamic origin but in a run down shape. Biashara Street in Mombasa means “Trade Street” is where the Indian Arab merchants set up shop and one can now find traditional garments on sale in small authentic shops. The town has been established before the middle of the twelfth century. Mombasa has a tropical climate on the warm side. Mombasa is the centre of coastal tourism in Kenyaas North to Mombasa island are Shanzu, Bamburi, Nyali and Kenyatta beaches. South to Mombasa island, there are Shelly, Tiwi and Diani beaches. There are many luxury hotel on these beaches. Mombasa competes for the best African city i.e. best cities in Africa and as far as facilities and development go, one of the best world cities.
