Port Elizabeth is city in South Africa, located in Eastern Cape Province name often shortened to PE and favorite nicknames Friendly City or Windy City, stretching 16kilometer on Algoa Bay. It is one of the major seaports in South Africa. Port Elizabeth was founded as 1820 town for British settlers and to strengthen border region between Cape Colony and warlike Xhosa tribe. It is part of Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality which has a population of around 1.3 million. The first Europeans were Bartolomew Dias, who landed in 1488 on St. Croix Island and Portuguese Vasco da Gama who noted in 1497 the Bird Island. In 1799, stone Fort was built and named Fort Frederick after Duke of to protect from French Troops and overlooked to become Port Elizabeth and is monument now. The old town now only evokes strong memories of a picturesque old educational and entertainment quarters. Portt Elizabeth was once the best African city but today is not largest African city nor famous African City even though Pretoria, South Africa capital has shown the way to all cities. Port Elizabeth needs to regain the glory of old quarters and sea front to become one of best world cities and best cities in Africa.
Port Elizabeth because of booming tourism and real estate, development continues and tourism especially historical tourism is encouraging. Another monument is Horse Memorial, which some may find worthwhile to visit. In 2001, Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality was formed as administrative area covering Port Elizabeth, the neighboring towns of Uitenhage and Despatch and surrounding agricultural areas. The name was chosen to honour Nelson Mandela; there is little to no historical connection between him and the region. The combined metropolitan area has a population estimated at around 1.3 million as of 2006. Port Elizabeth harbor, water front and city center are being upgraded before 2010 Football World Cup to , take on the Cape Town waterfront. The city is one of World Cup games venue and many visitors are expected. Port Elizabeth Airport also seems to heading for upgradation.
