Amman is the capital of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. As per the 2005 census, the city's population has touched 2,125,400, and is increasing rapidly. Amman also serves as the administrative capital and chief commercial center of Jordan.
Historically Amman has been enriched by quite a few civilizations. The first of them dates back to the Neolithic age, when a settled and artistically advanced civilization was formed in the region. Later on the Assyrians, the Persians and the Greeks occupied the land to leave their impressions on the indigenous culture of Amman.
Population explosion is a major cause for concern in Amman. With a huge number of immigrants and refugees coming over there to settle permanently, Amman faces a real hazard. Major historical events such as the Gulf War, the Six Day War, etc. saw many entering the land as refugees.
Considered to be one of the best cities in Asia, Amman is going through a transitional phase now. Once an ancient city, Amman has turned out to be a premier commercial center in Jordon. The plans that have been taken by the concerned authority to refurbish Amman include the following:
Construction of Jordan Gate, which is nearly completed, is being funded by Bahraini and Kuwaiti entrepreneurs. The two identical high rise buildings will serve as office buildings.
Construction of the American University of Jordan.
Sky Tower is under construction.
Jordan Twin Towers to be constructed by the Nuqul group. It will be 34 stories high and is scheduled to be completed by 2008.
Bonyan city consisting of 5 new skyscrapers that will house apartments and offices.
A proposed Amman World Trade Center of 33 floors.
Expansion of Queen Alia International Airport.
Establishment of the Emirates Towers.
Regarded among the best world cities, Amman dishes out magnificent tourism prospects. Tourism in Amman is basically centered around the old downtown area, a place featured with a traditional market area and a much revered mosque.
