Bangkok is the capital and the most recognizable city in Thailand. As one of the best cities in Asia, Bangkok stands apart from the rest of Thai cities with regards to economic and political stature. It is nestled on the banks of the Chao Phraya River, close to the Gulf of Thailand.

Formerly Bangkok was a small trading seat and port town on the western banks of the Chao Phraya River. It used to cater to the Ayutthaya Dynasty that ruled the territory from 1350 to 1767. The modernization of Bangkok was initiated during the tenures of King Mongkut and King Chulalongkorn.

Bangkok is famous for its number of water bodies, ranging from canals to rivers. The canals literally form a web around the city, providing water transportation facilities galore. This attribute has earned Bangkok the coveted identity the 'Venice of the East'. Being just two meters above the sea level, Bangkok is prone to major floods during the Monsoons. The prevalent tropical monsoon climate does not help too much either when it comes to preventing floods and water-logging.

Tourism in Bangkok is indeed special for many. A whopping number of 15 million international tourists visit Bangkok every year to get a glimpse of the historical sights over there. Places like Pattaya offers a tantalizing nightlife as well.
