Dubai can either mean any one of the seven emirates that form the United Arab Emirates (UAE), or the city of Dubai itself. This spectacular city was born with the foundation of the United Arab Emirates in 1971. Since then it has been attracting a large number of global tourists willing to go for an enchanting shopping spree in Arab markets.
Dubai, as one of the best cities in Asia, operates within a federal framework by sharing political, legal, economic and military activities with other emirates. It may be noted that each emirate has certain restrictions with regards to enforcing legal rights over others.
In terms of population, Dubai is the second largest city in the emirates after Abu Dhabi. Along with Abu Dhabi, Dubai also has the veto power over critical issues of national significance. Under the leadership of Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Dubai emerged as one of the best world cities by drawing in a significant amount of foreign investment. The development of infrastructure and standard of living was initiated by the authority's decision to create free trading zones and taxation levity.
The basic reason behind Dubai's growth as an economic superpower is its huge repository of petroleum and natural gas. The country earns the majority of its annual revenue by processing and exporting oil and natural gas. Real estate projects and sports have also played crucial role in making Dubai one of the much sought after tourism destinations in South Asia.
There is not much of historic evidence as far as the origin of Dubai is concerned. However numerous ancient towns have been unearthed to corroborate the views that Dubai acted as a link between Eastern and Western trading.
The city of Dubai is located right amidst the Arabian Desert. Dubai's landscape reflect the rugged smell of sand dunes and oasis. The climate is characteristically hot and dry, with temperatures remaining well over 40 degrees centigrade for the better part of a year.
Dubai serves a media hub of the middle-east. It is home to many major satellite channels and Internet service providers. Major international news agencies such as BBC, CNN, Reuters, etc. have set up their integrated network over there.
