Kuala Lumpur |
As one of the three Malaysian Federal Territories, Kuala Lumpur is the Malaysian capital and the largest city in Malaysia. Administratively under the state of Selangor, Kuala Lumpur is located in an enclaved position on the central west coast of Peninsular Malaysia. Inhabitants of Kuala Lumpur are referred to as Kuala Lumpurians or KLites. The city, considered by many among the best cities in Asia, is particularly renowned for being home to the tallest twin constructions in the world – the Petronas Twin Towers, flaunting Malyasia's economic and technological identity.
Kuala Lumpur holds the legislative seat in the Parliament of Malaysia. Formerly this city was home to the executive and judicial divisions of the federal government, before they were shifted to Putrajaya. Only a small portion of the judicial department is still there in Kuala Lumpur.
The history of the capital of Malaysia dates back to the 1850s. It is believed to have been founded at the time of opening up newer and larger tin mines in Malaysia. The Malay chief of Klang entrusted the task upon some Chine laborers, who ended up being by Sungai Gombak. This allusion also justifies the origin of the name Kuala Lumpur.
Kuala Lumpur has been subject to a lot of changes and transitional periods en route its journey to becoming one of the best world cities. After going through the disruptive times of the two World Wars, the Federal of Malaya eventually earned its freedom from the clutches of the British in 1957. Kuala Lumpur got city status in 1972 and two years later, it was formed as a Federal Territory.
Malay and English are the two primary languages used in Kuala Lumpur. While Malay is the official language in the region, English is widely spoken in official as well as study purposes. Quite a few Chinese and Indian dialects are used as well.
