Brisbane is the third largest city in Australia and largest Australian city in state of Queensland. It is close to Pacific Ocean, and is located on the Brisbane River on plains between the Great Dividing Range in south-eastern Queensland and Moreton Bay. The city name is in honour of Sir Thomas Brisbane, Governor New South Wales 1821 to 1825. It was chosen as the capital when Queensland was made a separate colony, in 1859. The city developed after World War II as it was the South West Pacific headquarters for General MacArthur. Brisbane has hosted 1982 Commonwealth Games, 1988 World's Fair and 2001 Goodwill Games. The population of Brisbane is about 1 million and that of Greater Brisbane is 1.7 million. Many Queenslanders regard Brisbane as the best Australian city. It undoubtedly is a famous Australian city. The city also merits worldwide attention as one of the best cities in Australia and best world cities.
Oldest Historic buildings are Windmill and Old Commissariat Store built in 1828, now the home of the Royal Historical Society of Brisbane and effectively runs as a museum. Another historic building is Shrine of Remembrance in ANZAC Square. Dedicated on 11 November 1930, the Shrine of Remembrance is Brisbane's main memorial of remembrance to Australia's war dead. Brisbane CBD central business district is only 2.2 square kilometers and is walkable. City has density of 379.4 people per square kilometer comparable to that of Sydney. Brisbane has a subtropical climate with hot, humid summers and dry, mild winters.
