Brussels

Brussels, one of the best world cities is located in Belgium and is its capital. Brussels is located in the heart of the city of Belgium, and is also the biggest municipality in that region. This municipality of Brussels is known as “The City of Brussels”. The city of Brussels is among the 19 municipalities which make up the Brussels-Capital Region. Brussels also happens to be the political seat of NATO. It is also the political seat of Western European Union (WEU) as well as the EUROCONTROL which is an European Organisation that deals with the Safety of Air Navigation.

Brussels in Europe is regarded one of the best cities in Europe. The name “Brussels” has been derived from an old Dutch term which was Bruocsella, Broekzele or Brucsella. The word meant “marsh home”. In a simpler way, it meant “a home that consists of one room, in the marsh”. In French, the word “Broekzele” was spelled as “Bruxelles”. In the Belgian French style of pronunciation “k” was replaced by “z” which eventually became “s”.

A good picture of the traditional lifestyle of Brussels can be had from the House of Toone. This is a theatre of marionettes. This theatre was initially located in Marolles area. Now it delivers slapstick comedy in an old estaminet which is only a few steps from the famous Grand Place, also popular as the Grote Markt. The Ommegang is the religious procession of the city which takes place each year in the month of July. The is a colorful procession which includes traditional giant puppets in the form of Saint Michael and Saint Gudula, then there are floats and several folkloric groups. They walk on foot or ride on a horseback all dressed in medieval garbs.
